I figured some of you would want to see this email I got, for various readings.
The RNC is happening in 33 days, and I've talked to a lot of you about
going down to NYC, joining the protests, making or voices heard, and
basically stirring shit up. The Bush administration seems to be
actively hostile towards democracy, towards our basic freedoms, and
toward what America has meant since it was founded. They walked all
over our votes in 2000, they disregarded and dismantled 4th amendment
protections, they've failed us on national security, and now they're
talking of possibly postponing our elections?!?!? I'm fucking sick of
it, and I'm fucking sick of them thinking they can silence America's
conscience with bullshit like "free speech" zones and empty terrorist
warnings. I want my fucking country back before I don't have one, and
protesting, while not direct action, will let everyone else in America
know how we feel, and make them ask themselves how they feel.
So, if you've gotten this far in my email, you're probably not a
Bush supporter. You probably want him to hear America stand up against
him, and to get him out of office as much as I do. And you probably
want to come down to NYC to protest against what he has done in our
names as much as I do. Email me back if you want in. The RNC takes
place August 29-September 2. You won't be missing classes, but you
will be back in New Haven. I want to get as many people down to New
York as possible, and I'm going to try to coordinate events, housing,
travel, etc. I'd really appreciate anyone willing to help with this,
anyone who has a car, or a place to stay, or any suggestions or ideas.
Again, let me know if you want in. Hope your summer's going well. For
all you out on the campaign trail, keep up the good work.

This is not, of course, to say people can't dislike Bush.. or whomever they please for that matter. This is also not to say that this particular person doesn't know much about Kerry.. it's just an observation I wanted to make.... and to give my advice to everyone..... look beyond what you see so readily in the media... find deeper facts, and remember to compare all of your choices (although there are really only two big choices), don't just know why you dislike one...
whatever, my two cents, take them or don't

But you can't blame people that much, because most people don't read all that much, and only the print media has given Kerry a chance to (somewhat) define himself. Otherwise they get negative attack ads (which don't seem to be having an effect) and Fox News attacking Kerry.
I think (hope?) during the next few months more people will begin to learn more about the real John Kerry. I know I'm doing my part in spreading the word.

Wow, you can actually count that far?
and I've talked to a lot of you about going down to NYC,
9/11 happened there, did you forget? You remember the 2000 election quite well, but do you remember 9/11?
joining the protests,
Did you run out and protest Al Qaeda when they slammed planes into our office buildings and vaporized 3000 people?
making or voices heard,
Are you capable of proofreading?
and basically stirring shit up.
Please wash your hands afterwards.
The Bush administration seems
Seems? You're insinuating because you have no solid facts. You've got no choice but to use weasel words like "seems."
to be actively hostile towards democracy,
Yeah, that's why he brought democracy to 50 million people on the other side of the planet -- or do those 50 million people mean nothing to you?
towards our basic freedoms,
Yes, of course, he's trampling over our basic freedoms. That's why we're now living in a police state, right?
and toward what America has meant since it was founded.
Whereas the flip-flopper John F. Kerry and the rich trial lawyer John Edwards perfectly embody the American tradition....
They walked all over our votes in 2000,
Yes, the vast right-wing conspiracy fixed the national elections... go on thinking that.
they disregarded and dismantled 4th amendment protections,
You're referring to PATRIOT, right? Notice how many terrorist attacks we've had on American soil since PATRIOT... that's right: none.
they've failed us on national security,
Yup, that's why we're having terrorist attacks on American soil, day after day...
and now they're talking of possibly postponing our elections?!?!?
No, actually, you're the one who's talking about that.

You took the words right outta my mouth.
and I'm fucking sick of them thinking they can silence America's conscience
The only people who are being silenced are terrorists. If you think America's conscience is the same thing as Al Qaeda, well then I guess you're right.
with bullshit like "free speech" zones and empty terrorist warnings.
Empty terrorist warnings? You've actually got access to our nation's top-secret intelligence reports on a daily basis? No you don't. You're pulling that clever turn of phrase, "empty terrorist warnings," out of your ass.
I want my fucking country back
Dude, where's my country? (http://www.spinsanity.org/columns/20031016.html)
before I don't have one,
You could always move to Canada... or France....
and protesting, while not direct action,
So what is direct action? Joining the Taliban? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/1779455.stm)
will let everyone else in America know how we feel,
Did you ever get that feeling that no one cares? That you're nothing more than the whispering winds of irrelevancy?
and make them ask themselves how they feel.
Inflation is low, unemployment is low, the economy is good, the nation and the world is much safer than it was on 9/10/01... I don't know about you, but I feel pretty damn good.
So, if you've gotten this far in my email, you're probably not a Bush supporter.
You know what they say: when you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME. Except in this case, you're the jackass, I'm the elephant.
You probably want him to hear America stand up against him, and to get him out of office as much as I do.
See: French (http://i.cnn.net/cnn/2003/ALLPOLITICS/05/02/democratic.debate/story.kerry.jpg) Revolution, 1789, guillotine, beheadings (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=iraq+beheadings).
And you probably want to come down to NYC to protest against what he has done in our names as much as I do.
Mmmh hmmm... sure... we're all as psycho as you.
Email me back if you want in.
Sure you're ready to handle the unexpected deluge of emails?
The RNC takes place August 29-September 2.
Same time as the Yale freshmen orientation and the first two days of classes. We've got our priorities straight, haven't we?
You won't be missing classes, but you will be back in New Haven.
Just like those "missing" WMD....
I want to get as many people down to New York as possible,
Swing by Ground Zero while you're in NY and inhale the air there. It contains the vaporized bodies of 3000 people killed due to your failed policies of national security.
and I'm going to try to coordinate events, housing, travel, etc.
Try. We'll be right here, cheering you on.
I'd really appreciate anyone willing to help with this, anyone who has a car, or a place to stay, or any suggestions or ideas.
People like you have ideas besides new ways of bashing Bush? Who'd've thunk it?
Again, let me know if you want in. Hope your summer's going well. For all you out on the campaign trail, keep up the good work.
Cheers!

This is one of the most absurd responses I've ever read. Not only is it nonsensical and confusing to read because of the organization, but it also offers few points that really matter. Not to say that I'm a liberal - I'm not. I'm no fan of Kerry. I'll be voting for Bush unless I get a good reason why not to (which I haven't; he's doing an excellent job of leading America). But the main thing I hate is when people of either political party (unfortunately, Republicans seem to make this mistake much more often) ignore the message of one thing and argue about completely different points.
While this response was humorous, it didn't address a single thing that mattered and pretty much followed Ann Coulter's horrible logic of "If you poke fun at someone's character and ideas, rather than making any valid arguments, you win." You don't win.
And I hate the suggestion that being against war is unpatriotic. Stop lying to yourself. Have a nice day.

fuck you
Fuck you! You obviously don't realize that you haven't used any facts to back up points...good economy? low unemployment? are you shitting me? liberals caused 9/11?Do you realize that Bush invaded the wrong country? Iran is the one with the ties to al Qaeda. Iraq is nothing more than a way to distract the country while Bush and Cheney rake in the cash from the "reconstruction" contracts. There were no WMD's in Iraq!
your post is just another republican attempt to use "patriotism" and absolutely no logic and facts...go fuck yourself!

ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED?
listen, im from new york, i live literally a block from ground zero, and i would like to give you a big fuck you as a new yorker and as someone who experienced 9/11 firsthand. i cannot believe you have the fucking balls to blame the deaths of americans on liberalism and also to simply throw around 9/11 as your political fodder.
i'd also like to give you a big fuck you as an AMERICAN. just because america is one of the most politically "free" nations (if not the most) doesn't mean that (1) we can't fight against backsliding or (2) that people are not allowed to take advantage of their rights. also, just because people's opinions dont agree with yours doesnt mean they shouldnt be heard.
oh, and you know how many attacks there were on us soil before the usa patriot act? one. also, 4th amendment right to privacy violations anyone? racial profiling anyone?
you have a right to voice your opinion, although i would prefer if it were slightly more informed and you didnt whip out 9/11 so much. you are far more insensitive than the people you are accusing. congratulations.

yeesh
Hey, yeesh, you got some pretty scary responses to this post, didn't you? I agree with everything you said, and I want to point out to everyone else that disliking Bush is not the ONLY reason that we vote for Kerry, and it is insulting when people assume that we're voting for Kerry SIMPLY because he is the only real alternative.I personally like Kerry a lot--i think he has a very strong moral character, and I agree with many of his stances on domestic and foreign issues. (If any of you would like me to be more specific, I'd be happy to, but this is not the place.) I'm voting for him for THESE reasons, not simply because I'm unhappy with Bush.
So just thought I'd say that...and yeah, I'd love to come to the RNC protest. My name is Sara Schneider, and I'm in Morse. I'd love to be updated on anything you're organizing, though I can't really committ at this point in time. Keep me posted though!

Re: yeesh
First of all, no one is saying that everyone voting for Kerry is only doing it as an anti-bush thing. Obviously anyone with a brain will read, research, and find a candidate they want to be Pres, as you have done. However, the majority of uneducated liberals will be voting for Kerry for no reason, except "well, he's not bush". At the same time, the majority of uneducated conservatives (country singers come to mind) will all vote for Bush for no reason, except "it's the Patriotic thing to do". So there, both sides suck. Smart people will not decide this election. Stupid liberals and ignorant conservatives will. All that matters is which side of morons brings out more voters. Right now...it looks like the AB liberals are slightly ahead of Toby Keith and the Shock'N Yall campaign.July 31 2004, 20:55:02 UTC 7 years ago

eeeeek
oh no, did ANYONE watch the democratic national convention???? come on, people, wake up and listen to the so-called "unknown" kerry--he has a TON of great stuff to say (well, he did say it, but i'm guessing none of you saw). not only is he the "one other than bush" (which makes him automatically muuuuuch more preferable), but he's damn smart and has so many great plans, it makes me optimistic.August 1 2004, 14:01:42 UTC 7 years ago
Re: eeeeek
I saw it...it was a great convention. I think if you saw Kerry's speech, it dispelled many of the myths surrounding him (that he can't relate to people, that he's frigid, that he has no real ideas). Honestly one of the reasons that I was for Kerry in the begining was because of the fact that I didn't like where the country was under the Bush administration, but after watching the convention...I saw many new reasons for supporting Kerry (his bravery, his depth, his experience). I began to believe that Kerry would not only be a different president than Bush, but a damn good president as well.Anonymous

Oh, and also a random thing ... I'm also tired of people saying this:
"they've (Bush admin) failed us on national security"
What about Clinton? It doesn't seem like he helped national security very much. Bush runs a tight ship over there at the White House ... it's not as if our government agencies went to shit when he took office, they were already in poor shape.

and my views on Iraq: maybe there weren't really any ties at all to 9/11, and so the state goals were kind of well, stupid. But, when it comes down to it, i honestly believe that saddam was a horrible horrible human being, deserving nothing but death (quite frankly, if i were given a gun and put in front of him, i wouldn't hesitate... i wonder how the soldiers had such self-control). I'm absolutley sick of the media trying to portray him as "not so bad"... "oh no, he's sick... he's a real person too!..." and blah blah blah, doing interviews and whatnot... Do we forget how many people he killed? BRUTALLY killed? I'm sorry, at this point it doesn't matter what Bush said he wanted in there. Iraq used to be one of the most wonderful countries in the Middle East.. a center for learning and change. Then came some shit and saddam..... So yea, despite the fucked up reasonings for it, I think Bush also just really wanted to take down a horrible man.... Some people then ask "what place do we have to go in and impose ourselves on other cultures?".. fuck off... what do you think AIDS relief does? teachers on contraception? food to the hungry? doctors without borders? etc... i do believe in helping people when we can... and Bush could... and he did....
So yea, those are just my opinions... everyone's entitled to their own...

1.) War where war is not necessarily needed. (war should be a last option not a first option)
2.) Invasion of people's personal rights through Pro-life shit and trying to stop gay marrriages.... let people live their own lives assholes.
3.) Breaking down the protections on the environment... This alone would make me not support Bush...
4.) Number 1 and 3 being done at the benefit of large businesses.
I'm sure there are a few other things but those are my main four reasons why I don't like Bush. Also, he can't speak without making up some new word, but thats just a way to make fun of him, those issues are what make me angry.

RNC
Hey!So I'm actually class of 2007, but a friend pointed me to this website, and it has provided much amusement. Anyway, I would be very interested in going on a protest in NYC, and can probably even swing some places to stay for people. I also know a ton of upperclassmen who would love to join a Yale contingent. Contact me and let me know if I can help plan this, and/or just come along.

Hell Yeah
I agree with most of what you said, and Bush definitely has to go. I'd be happy to help you coordinate this, just send me an email sometime (bgants@yahoo.com. Or, if you want to be Yale-like about it, brendan.gants@yale.edu)
